Save On Air Conditioning This Summer – Part 2

So, here we are in part two of our blog series about how to save on air conditioning this summer. We hope that part one gave you some useful information that will lead to lower energy bills this summer. Without further ado, here’s part two:

Save On Air Conditioning: Turn Up the Temperature

We know that many of our customers don’t want to turn the temperature on their thermostat up at all during the summer. We get it, you’ve got an air conditioner because you want to keep your home cool, but honestly 1 degree won’t be noticed. You may notice it a little at first but your body will adapt. In the end 1 degree can save you a few hundred dollars over the course of a season of use. Essentially, if you’re really hot turning down the temperature as low as it will go doesn’t cool you off any quicker. It simply wastes energy by making you colder than you need to be.

Most households can be comfortable with a temperature of about 78°F (although some adjustments may need to be made for older residents and small children). Keep the temperature around this setting during the daytime and turn it up about 5° or 10° when you leave the house; you may be surprised at how much you save! You can also turn it up or of at night, which was covered in part one of this blog series.

Even More Ways To Save On Air Conditioning

One of the easiest ways to save on air conditioning costs is to book an annual air conditioning maintenance appointment. This ensures that your air conditioner is operating as efficiently and properly as possible. When this is the case it runs perfectly and doesn’t have to work as hard or as long to cool your home, obviously resulting in saved energy and money.

Another way to accomplish this exact same thing is to change the filter often. A dirty filter impeded airflow, which reduces efficiency. It will also reduce the air quality in your home.

On top of all that if you notice a strange noise or sound coming for your air conditioner, or it’s just not working as well as it use to call an air conditioning technician. Getting problems fixed right away means less time running an inefficient air conditioner. It also means that you may be able to avoid a big repair when something even bigger goes wrong.

Save On Air Conditioning This Summer – Part 1

Summer is just around the corner. It may not feel like it since snow seems to be on every corner these days, but it’ll come faster than you think. When the nice weather is here we all want nothing more than to soak it all up, but that also means we want our homes to be a cool refuge for us at the end of the day. Not a problem since you’ve got an air conditioner, but while you’re at it you might as well save on air conditioning this summer. It’s much easier than you think. Here are some tips.

Save On Air Conditioning: Stay Cool On Your Own

We all know at least one heat wave will barrel through Toronto and the GTA each summer, so ensure that your air conditioner is ready for it. It’s important for the health of your family. Keep yourself and your family cool and you won’t have to run your system as much to save on air conditioning. Here are some ways to keep cool:

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor work, and if you do need to work outside take plenty of breaks and make sure someone is there with you. They can see how the heat affects you just as well as you can feel it affecting you.
  • Listen to your body, and learn to take rests every now and then if needed.
  • Wear light clothing in light colors, as this reflects the sun’s rays, so you won’t burn up and be able to take advantage of any cool breeze.
  • Always drink plenty of water while your working and even when you’re not. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as it dehydrates you, which makes you hotter. This also increase your risk of passing out, heat stroke and other ailments.

Save On Air Conditioning By Giving It A Break

Your air conditioner is a machine, which means it needs a break from time to time. The alternative is that it will experience more wear and tear than it was made to handle at a time and can break down. Here are some tips to save on air conditioning simply by turning off your air conditioner.

  • At night, you can often turn off the AC and open up some windows. It’s simple, the sun goes down and so does the temperatures. Many people also find that the cool night air helps them sleep better.
  • When it’s daytime close your blinds and shades. This will keep the sun and the heat out and allow you to keep your air conditioner off for longer periods at a time.
  • Try to limit your usage of the oven, dryer, washing machine and other appliances that emit a lot of heat. If you can schedule your day so they get used when the temperature drops in the evening you will notice that your home will be much cooler.
  • If you are simply running your air conditioner because you’re at home working on a computer or reading, try going to a library. They’re air conditioned and quiet as well, so you won’t have to run your air conditioning unit all day.
  • Go to the local public pool for a swim instead of sitting in your air conditioned house. You’ll not only cool down, but thank yourself for the exercise.
  • Use fans to help distribute cool air throughout the home.

Stay tuned for more ways to save on air conditioning in part two of this useful blog series.

Automation Can Help You Save On Air Conditioning

We don’t like to brag, but we’re home air conditioning experts. It’s just one of the many things we do very well. We’ve been around for a while now, over 30 years in fact, and during that time we’ve learned a lot about air conditioning. One thing we were excited about when technology began to change is automation.

Automation Is Good For Air Conditioning

It’s not uncommon for people to waste energy and in turn money on air conditioning by leaving the system running throughout the day. Whether they don’t know any better or they forget to turn it off, they’ve left it running at a temperature designed for when people are actually home. Many of our customers do this, until we advise them otherwise of course. By now most of our customers have programmable or smart thermostats, which are excellent inventions and in our eyes a necessary automation for every home.

Using these thermostats is the best way to save money on both your air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter. Many smart thermostats actually allow you to gauge your energy usage in addition to controlling your system from anywhere.

  • Check on the air conditioning and heating systems using a remote thermostat that connects to Wi-Fi.
  • Track energy usage with data stored in the application.
  • Allow the thermostat to learn your habits in order to automatically set the most efficient temperatures for your needs.
  • Have the ability to control the temperature in case there is a drastic shift in the atmospheric temperature.

We install hundreds of new programmable and smart thermostats every year throughout Toronto and the GTA, saving our customers thousand of dollars every year.

Programmable and smart thermostats install easily with just about any air conditioning system, and with the help of an HVAC air conditioning professional you can start saving money on your energy bills in no time at all. Well, you can actually begin saving the moment your new thermostat is activated. So why wait?

Don’t Forget To Change The Air Conditioner Filter

Purchasing a new high-efficiency heating or cooling system from a reputable HVAC company like Novel Care Toronto is an excellent way to ensure you save money on your energy bills. One of the easiest ways to keep it running efficiently is to keep changing the furnace or air conditioner filter. Depending on your type of system this might be the same filter, but since it’s summer let’s discuss the air conditioner filter.

The Importance of The Air Conditioner Filter

Changing the filter in your air conditioner is one of the most important things you can do, and it should be done regularly. Dust, pollen, and other airborne impurities are always being drawn into your home’s HVAC system and being filtered out of the air instead of being spread throughout your home. As your filter slowly gets clogged it can allow more and more dust and other particles into your home via the duct system. A clogged air conditioner filter also makes your air conditioner work harder to circulate air, which reduces its efficiency, and in turn increases your monthly energy bills.

Even when your system isn’t active and your air conditioner isn’t running, the fan might still be running. Many system constantly have the fan going in order to circulate the air throughout the house. Even if you haven’t used your air conditioner recently the filter still might need changing as the system continuously filters the air.

Essentially, it’s a good idea to check your filter every month and change it if necessary. If you find that your filter isn’t getting dirty and doesn’t need changing there may be another blockage somewhere in your system that’s preventing airflow. This should be investigated by an HVAC or air conditioning professional.

Overall changing your air conditioner filter is an easy task, but if you don’t know how to do it contact Novel Care Toronto today: 905-737-5016. Our technicians have been working in Toronto, York Region and the rest of the GTA for over 30 years.

3 Top Factors That Affect New Air Conditioner Pricing

You might think that there are numerous factors that affect the price of a new air conditioner, but realistically there are 3 main factors.

  • Efficiency (SEER rating)
  • Single-Stage vs. 2-Stage Cooling
  • Size

New Air Conditioner Efficiency (SEER)

SEER is the measurement of the efficiency of your new air conditioner, it stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The SEER ratings for any new air conditioner start at 13 and go into the 20’s. Popular air conditioners that combine affordability and energy-efficiency are typically rated between 13 and 17. These popular units are also typically single-stage air conditioners.

As it goes the higher the SEER rating the more expensive a new air conditioner usually is.

New Air Conditioner Stage Cooling

Single Stage Air Conditioner: These air conditioners function like a light. They either get switched on or off. They operate at either 100% capacity or 0%, there’s no in between.

2-Stage Air Conditioner: These air conditioners start-up running at about 2/3 of their maximum capacity and then increase to 100% only if the outdoor temperature warrants it. This ensures that the unit is operating as efficiently as possible at all times. 2-stage air conditioners typically cost about $1000 more than a single stage unit, but over time that cost can be recouped on your energy bill.

New Air Conditioner Size

When referring to the size of an air conditioner it’s not in reference to the physical size of the unit. Air conditioners are measured in tons, which indicates how much cooling capacity it has. Typically, central air conditioners increase incrementally in size by 1/2 tons. The larger the unit the more expensive it will be. To find out what size init your home or commercial space needs it’s usually best to consult with a reputable and experienced HVAC technician.

Overall, there are numerous factors that can affect the cost of your new air conditioner, but these 3 factors carry the most weight so understanding them is important. Now that you know more about the reasons for the cost of your air conditioner you can have an educated conversation with your Novel Care Toronto HVAC technician about which new air conditioner is right for you.

Millennials Don’t Care About An Energy Efficient Air Conditioner

In case you don’t know millennials are the trendy 20ish demographic that lives in urban and densely populated city areas, they ride the subway to work, they love eating out and they don’t care at all about an energy efficient air conditioner. Well, that’s not entirely true. They do care about energy efficiency, the environment and the like, but they’re predominantly renters. This means that without owning a house they haven’t even regarded the needs that come along with it.

A recent report by the National Association of Home Builders found 75% of millennials want homes, and 66% would actually prefer to live in the burbs. 28% indicated that Energy Star appliances were essentials, while 84% of those also said an energy efficient home is ideal. Overall, they do value an energy efficient air conditioner, but haven’t even gotten around to considering it yet.

Alternative reports have indicated the same results, but have included costs. This is where millennials become price sensitive to the added costs of energy efficient appliances.

The Value: Energy Efficient Air Conditioner

The challenge the HVAC industry and leading HVAC companies in Toronto like Novel Care Toronto have encountered is there is a lack of education about the long-term benefits of energy efficiency versus the short-term cost.

Overall, energy efficient air conditioners, furnace, boilers and other appliances do cost slightly more, but in the long-term reduce energy bills. These reductions easily compensate for higher initial costs, produce fewer emissions, and quite often perform better.

Energy efficient air conditioners and other appliances should be viewed as an investment just like many other pieces of a home. They do have the ability to produce good returns in lower maintenance and monthly costs, and will last for many years.

For more information about energy efficient HVAC components, Energy Star appliances, or to schedule a free estimate appointment contact Novel Care Toronto today: 905-737-5016.

3 Important Questions About Air Conditioner Size & Rating?

Our customers constantly have questions about their air conditioner. Whether we’re installing a new ductless air conditioner or performing maintenance on a central air conditioner our customer have asked lot of questions over the years. While we’ve answered lots of them in person here are a few of the less common questions we get that might be useful.

Q: What’s Variable Speed Mean?

A: Variable speed is referring to the blower motor on your air conditioner. Variable speed blower motors are designed to provide enhanced comfort throughout your home with reduced air velocity and noise. When this type of blower turns on it operates at a low-speed, which makes less noise and allows the compressor and coil to get warmed up prior to forcing large amounts of air through the units or system.

Q: What Size Air Conditioner Should I Install?

A: So, it’s finally time to replace your old air conditioner. While considering a new unit can be exciting it’s important to take a few things into consideration first. While there are similar models available by different manufacturers you must first calculate the heat-load of your home. This calculation provides you with the proper size of unit for your needs, the size of your home, it’s layout, and a few other variables. The best way to find out what size unit is best for your home is to contact a reputable and professional HVAC technician from a company like Novel Care. They have the knowledge and experience to properly evaluate your home and provide you with recommendations. Aside from that we always recommend installing high-efficiency units that will save you money on your energy bills in the long-term.

Q: What Is A SEER Rating?

A: SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ration. This is a measurement of the efficiency of an air conditioner. The higher the SEER Rating is the more efficient a unit is and the less it will cost you to operate. Most brands have a number of units with great SEER ratings and highlight them so they’re easy to find and understand. A Novel Care technician can assist you in selecting a unit within your price range that has a great SEER rating.
