After a summer in Toronto and the GTA, most people will agree that you need some kind of way to cool down on those humid nights. If you have pets or your parents living with you, you can’t afford to not have a/c in your home. The city has been under heat warnings in the past, but central air systems can make all the difference. Take a look at why central air systems are the right choice for Toronto summers.

Central Air Systems Are Quiet

Everyone always thinks that air conditioning is the same when you’re looking through countless models listed at various prices. One important X factor with central air systems is that they are known for being on the quiet side. Sure, the noise may not bother you during the day, but if you’re a light sleeper, a loud a/c unit could make summer nights last forever. Consider looking into the right model of central air conditioning for a quiet solution.

Central Air Systems Are Powerful & Efficient

To really tip the scales in favour of central air systems, you need to consider how big your home is. If it’s larger, then a window unit or even ductless option may not cool your entire living space. Central air provides you with enough power to keep your home cool and comfortable no matter how hot it gets outside.

Don’t think that more power means higher energy bills though. Most central air systems are designed to be energy efficient to avoid being wasteful. Plus, they are contained to the house itself with very little chance of cool air escaping – which is a problem for window based units.

Only Let The Professionals Install Central Air Systems

While today there might be more do-it-yourselfers than ever before, that doesn’t mean this is a job for anyone. Installing your central air takes a professional, so please don’t try to handle this one on your own.

Central air is an investment, so make sure it’s done right and it will last a long time. Trust us, we have over 30 years of experience repairing, maintaining and installing central air systems along with any other HVAC system. You wouldn’t believe the damage we’ve seen from people trying to hack it themselves and save a few bucks. We always recommend letting a professional handle important systems in your home. Just give us a call at 905-737-5016 to get started. Someone from our team would be more than happy to help you get an estimate or just answer your questions, so you can make informed decisions before you install. Contact us today, and let us keep your home cool this summer.

In Toronto and the GTA, there is no shortage of central air conditioner companies to choose from. But knowing the good from the bad can be a challenge when going through all the different brands and models available. Here are 2 of the central air conditioner companies we use, who have been very popular with our customers over the last 30 years. Take a look.

2 Central Air Conditioning Companies You Can Trust

Lennox – Being comfortable as the temperature rises and falls is important. That’s why Lennox’s Precise Comfort Cooling Technology is so popular with its customers. This feature helps stabilize your home’s internal temperature to within 1 degree of what you set on your thermostat…all the time. Most units blast on when the thermostat changes, but that can create times where you are cold or warm and then forced to fiddle with the thermostat yourself. Instead, this cooling technology allows the central unit to adjust and distribute a steady stream of cool air in the summer, so you’re never too warm indoors.

York – Not to be outdone, York has a few interesting features of their own. First, is its efficiency. York actually has units that range between 15% and 25% higher efficiency than some models on the market today. That means you’ll see a savings each month since it uses less energy to cool your home. Second, York has its own patented feature called Quiet Drive. This ensures the model is always as quiet as it can be. Pair this with the fact that all central air conditioner units are outdoors, and rest assured you’ll almost forget you have an air conditioner when its keeping you cool all summer.

We encourage you to look into these brands for yourself to learn more. There are plenty to choose from, but having the right professional recommend specific models based on your home’s needs can help you narrow down your choices.

Let us help narrow your search for central air conditioner companies, so you can have the right unit cooling your home this summer.

Hopefully, you’re reading this in the springtime to avoid any last-minute pressures that a hot summer day in Toronto and the GTA can bring. If not, no big deal, we’ll make this short and get right to the benefits of upgrading to a new central air conditioning unit in your home. Take a look below.

A New Central Air Conditioning Unit Is Very Quiet

Cooling off indoors in the middle of a heatwave is nice, but being able to sleep through a humid night is better. Good thing this air conditioning option doesn’t make a lot of noise. In fact, because the condenser is located on the outside of your home, the chances of you hearing anything are quite low. That means a solid night’s sleep, even when the temperature is well into the 30s.

Expect Your New Central Air Conditioning To Be Powerful And Last A Long Time

The major benefit of air conditioning is that it can cool your entire living space. That’s not a problem for central air. Unlike a window based unit, central air has the power to easily cool multiple rooms. Best of all, they are efficient too. That means your energy bill won’t skyrocket as long as you use your air conditioner correctly to keep your indoor temperature comfortable.

Another great perk of central units are they last long. On average, a good maintained system can last anywhere between 15 and 20 years. That’s a great investment that will help you beat the heat summer after summer after summer.

Let The Professionals At Novel Care Install Your New Central Air Conditioner

Now that you’ve read the positives of choosing central air, don’t make the fatal error of finding just anyone to install it. That’s how money is wasted. In a city as big as Toronto and the GTA, there could be countless “professionals” and “handymen” who might be available to help, but that doesn’t mean they are qualified to get the job done right.

Make sure the person or company you choose has been around long enough to have the correct experience. In our case, we’ve been serving Toronto and the GTA for more than 30 years, so we know everything about maintaining, repairing, and installing HVAC systems correctly – including central air conditioners. Just give us a call at 905-737-5016 to get started. A member of our team is always around to answer your questions and setup an appointment to provide an onsite assessment. After all, we want to make sure the job is done right, and we’ll go out of our way to make sure that happens. Contact us today.

So, here we are in part two of our blog series about how to save on air conditioning this summer. We hope that part one gave you some useful information that will lead to lower energy bills this summer. Without further ado, here’s part two:

Save On Air Conditioning: Turn Up the Temperature

We know that many of our customers don’t want to turn the temperature on their thermostat up at all during the summer. We get it, you’ve got an air conditioner because you want to keep your home cool, but honestly 1 degree won’t be noticed. You may notice it a little at first but your body will adapt. In the end 1 degree can save you a few hundred dollars over the course of a season of use. Essentially, if you’re really hot turning down the temperature as low as it will go doesn’t cool you off any quicker. It simply wastes energy by making you colder than you need to be.

Most households can be comfortable with a temperature of about 78°F (although some adjustments may need to be made for older residents and small children). Keep the temperature around this setting during the daytime and turn it up about 5° or 10° when you leave the house; you may be surprised at how much you save! You can also turn it up or of at night, which was covered in part one of this blog series.

Even More Ways To Save On Air Conditioning

One of the easiest ways to save on air conditioning costs is to book an annual air conditioning maintenance appointment. This ensures that your air conditioner is operating as efficiently and properly as possible. When this is the case it runs perfectly and doesn’t have to work as hard or as long to cool your home, obviously resulting in saved energy and money.

Another way to accomplish this exact same thing is to change the filter often. A dirty filter impeded airflow, which reduces efficiency. It will also reduce the air quality in your home.

On top of all that if you notice a strange noise or sound coming for your air conditioner, or it’s just not working as well as it use to call an air conditioning technician. Getting problems fixed right away means less time running an inefficient air conditioner. It also means that you may be able to avoid a big repair when something even bigger goes wrong.

Summer is just around the corner. It may not feel like it since snow seems to be on every corner these days, but it’ll come faster than you think. When the nice weather is here we all want nothing more than to soak it all up, but that also means we want our homes to be a cool refuge for us at the end of the day. Not a problem since you’ve got an air conditioner, but while you’re at it you might as well save on air conditioning this summer. It’s much easier than you think. Here are some tips.

Save On Air Conditioning: Stay Cool On Your Own

We all know at least one heat wave will barrel through Toronto and the GTA each summer, so ensure that your air conditioner is ready for it. It’s important for the health of your family. Keep yourself and your family cool and you won’t have to run your system as much to save on air conditioning. Here are some ways to keep cool:

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor work, and if you do need to work outside take plenty of breaks and make sure someone is there with you. They can see how the heat affects you just as well as you can feel it affecting you.
  • Listen to your body, and learn to take rests every now and then if needed.
  • Wear light clothing in light colors, as this reflects the sun’s rays, so you won’t burn up and be able to take advantage of any cool breeze.
  • Always drink plenty of water while your working and even when you’re not. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as it dehydrates you, which makes you hotter. This also increase your risk of passing out, heat stroke and other ailments.

Save On Air Conditioning By Giving It A Break

Your air conditioner is a machine, which means it needs a break from time to time. The alternative is that it will experience more wear and tear than it was made to handle at a time and can break down. Here are some tips to save on air conditioning simply by turning off your air conditioner.

  • At night, you can often turn off the AC and open up some windows. It’s simple, the sun goes down and so does the temperatures. Many people also find that the cool night air helps them sleep better.
  • When it’s daytime close your blinds and shades. This will keep the sun and the heat out and allow you to keep your air conditioner off for longer periods at a time.
  • Try to limit your usage of the oven, dryer, washing machine and other appliances that emit a lot of heat. If you can schedule your day so they get used when the temperature drops in the evening you will notice that your home will be much cooler.
  • If you are simply running your air conditioner because you’re at home working on a computer or reading, try going to a library. They’re air conditioned and quiet as well, so you won’t have to run your air conditioning unit all day.
  • Go to the local public pool for a swim instead of sitting in your air conditioned house. You’ll not only cool down, but thank yourself for the exercise.
  • Use fans to help distribute cool air throughout the home.

We don’t like to brag, but we’re home air conditioning experts. It’s just one of the many things we do very well. We’ve been around for a while now, over 30 years in fact, and during that time we’ve learned a lot about air conditioning. One thing we were excited about when technology began to change is automation.

Automation Is Good For Air Conditioning

It’s not uncommon for people to waste energy and in turn money on air conditioning by leaving the system running throughout the day. Whether they don’t know any better or they forget to turn it off, they’ve left it running at a temperature designed for when people are actually home. Many of our customers do this, until we advise them otherwise of course. By now most of our customers have programmable or smart thermostats, which are excellent inventions and in our eyes a necessary automation for every home.

Using these thermostats is the best way to save money on both your air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter. Many smart thermostats actually allow you to gauge your energy usage in addition to controlling your system from anywhere.

  • Check on the air conditioning and heating systems using a remote thermostat that connects to Wi-Fi.
  • Track energy usage with data stored in the application.
  • Allow the thermostat to learn your habits in order to automatically set the most efficient temperatures for your needs.
  • Have the ability to control the temperature in case there is a drastic shift in the atmospheric temperature.

We install hundreds of new programmable and smart thermostats every year throughout Toronto and the GTA, saving our customers thousand of dollars every year.

Programmable and smart thermostats install easily with just about any air conditioning system, and with the help of an HVAC air conditioning professional you can start saving money on your energy bills in no time at all. Well, you can actually begin saving the moment your new thermostat is activated. So why wait?

Earlier this year, Kyle and Samantha had just bought a new home in the east end of Toronto in Leslieville. Like all homes in the area it’s old, but has been renovated, so there are few mechanical issues with the house. Being a smaller home the person who did the renovation left the boiler and radiators in the home to maximize space. To supplement the heating, provide air circulation and also cooling in the summer they also installed a ductless heat pump. A ductless heat pump is a great way to further add control to the heating and cooling systems, so it is a welcome addition to any home, but in this case it was poorly installed.

Unfortunately for Kyle and Samantha this ductless heat pump wasn’t installed correctly, which led to its early demise. Without a warranty or any other recourse to take with the seller of the home, they called Novel Care Toronto. We can certainly sympathize with Kyle and Samantha because moving can be a time consuming and expensive part of life. While it’s expensive it should also be exciting, so this road bump took some of the wind out of their sails.

Since we were replacing the ductless heat pump anyway, they wanted a new system with increased efficiency to provide the comfort they wanted in the main living area of their home, but without a big impact on the energy bills.

We replaced the old broken down ductless heat pump system with a new Mitsubishi Hyper Heat heat pump system. These state of the art systems come with a 10 year parts and labor warranty, so if anything goes wrong with this one they will certainly be covered. Ductless heat pump systems act both as cool and heating sources for the home, and come with humidity control, which is important for homes with boilers and radiators.

Call Novel Care For Ductless Heat Pump Help

We were happy to help Kyle and Samantha out with this little problem. In the short term it can be frustrating, but in the long run they might look back on it and have a bit of a laugh. If you have a ductless heat pump or any ductless air conditioning system that needs to be replaced call Novel Care Toronto. We’re always happy to help and provide 24/7 emergency service throughout Toronto and the GTA. Call 905-737-5016 to get a free estimate today.

One of the most common questions that we get from our customer, friends and family about our job is how does ductless AC work? It’s a very effective system for cooling your home and the process itself is fairly straightforward. But make no mistake, the technology in a ductless AC unit is state of the art and very impressive. That’s why they’re so efficient and reliable these days.

Essentially, ductless AC systems provide cooling and heating in your home without needing ductwork. The indoor unit that you see hanging on the wall or ceiling has a corresponding outdoor unit. The outdoor unit is called the compressor and carries refrigerant and power to the indoor unit through a small system of pipes. The refrigerant is delivered directly to the indoor unit, which is also called the air handler, typically located on the wall or ceiling of a room in your home. Installation is fairly easy and does not require any major construction or renovating. All that it takes is to drill a small 4 inch hole in an exterior wall that can be used to connect the two units.

If you also want ductless heating, you will need to install a ductless heat pump. These units look and function basically the same as ductless AC units. They supply both heating and cooling.

Here’s an example of how a ductless AC system is connected.

When is it best to use a ductless AC system?

Ductless systems and heat pumps are very useful in lots of situations and can be a great addition or any cooling or heating system in your home. There are several scenarios in which you should consider installing a ductless AC system:

  1. If you have an addition that you need to heat and cool, and don’t want to spend thousands of dollars on installing ductwork.
  2. If you have an attic or a garage space that you want to heat and don’t want to, or cannot install ductwork.
  3. If you live in an old house, where structurally it would be too difficult and expensive to install a new system of ducts.
  4. If your home is relatively small (under 1500 sq. ft.) and ductwork cannot be easily installed.
  5. If you have central heat and AC, but want a supplemental system when temperatures get either too hot or cold. A ductless system can work well in particular rooms of the house that don’t get adequate heating or cooling from the central system.

Even those that have a heat pump in their home might not fully understand what they do or how they do it. We have many customers ask us all the time: How do heat pumps work? We’ll here’s your answer folks.

Heat pumps are used as heating sources in small spaces and homes that need supplementary heating. It’s difficult to completely heat your entire home with heat pumps, but it’s not impossible. So how do heat pumps work? They heat the air in your home by transferring air from the outside of your house to the inside. They are very efficient at heating spaces in your home and usually take about 15 minutes to heat an average sized room. Once heated up they are even more efficient at maintaining that temperature.

Split-System Heat Pump

One of the most popular types of heat pump systems is the single split system. This single split system is designed to only heat one room or space in your home. Depending on the size of your heat pump systems and unit and the placement, it can sometimes do a great job at warming most of your house. If you have an open concept living area then they’re even more useful. Here’s how they work:

Ducted Multi-Heat Pump System

The ducted multi-heat pump system is more complex to install and not as common. These types of installations have vents in every room and are ducted through the ceiling. They’re less intrusive than the split-system heat pump, but they’re much more expensive to install. The cost of a ducted heat pump can start at $15,000 for an average sized home and go up from there. Here’s an example of how ducted multi-heat pump systems work:

how do heat pumps work

  1. Excess warmth from your heater is distributed to rooms via a super efficient inline ducting fan
  2. Via a filtered eave inlet your home is ventilated with a small amount of drier air to offset the moisture build-up (from cooking, drying, clothes, showering etc)
  3. Free, filtered warm air is automatically harvested from your roof space to offset heater costs. (Note: Summer Mode disables this function)
  4. Rooms are warmed as air circulates around the house continuously, and persistent condensation is gone

So, How Do Heat Pumps Work?

It’s fairly simple and a really efficient way to heat your home. Most people don’t know exactly what type of installation is best for their needs, or what size of heat pump they need, but that’s why we’re here.
