Doing your research before you buy anything is a common practice. This is especially true when considering a new heating and cooling system for your home. There are a lot of factors to consider, so we put together a few “need-to-knows” to help you avoid common ductless air conditioner buying mistakes.

Thinking Bigger Is Better Is One Of The Worst Ductless Air Conditioner Buying Mistakes

While size may matter to some people, it’s not that helpful when it comes to keeping your home at the right temperature. What you want to focus on is the SEER rating that comes with your ductless air conditioner. SEER is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and it is the best indicator for how efficient your system will be. The higher the rating, the better. However, higher ratings tend to carry higher price tags, but they will also save you more on energy bills each month.

More Ductless Air Conditioner Buying Mistakes: Bargain Hunting & Self-Installation

While the price is always a factor in upgrading your home, it’s important to not be stingy here. It’s okay to ask for different options with high SEER ratings, but you don’t want to settle for something that won’t get the job done properly either. Finding this balance comes from working with a professional installer on this project.

Self-installation as a way to save money is the last of the 3 big ductless air conditioner buying mistakes. The installation itself won’t be too difficult if you’ve had experience. If you are a novice though, you could end up making an error that would compromise the integrity of the unit, void any warranty, or shorten the overall life cycle of your ductless air conditioner. That could mean repair bills or replacing your heating and cooling before you normally would. Leave it to the professionals instead. Most installers offer a warranty and can answer any questions you have so you get peace of mind.

Heating a home on those especially cold winter nights isn’t easy. It takes a lot of energy, which in turn leads to a spike in your monthly bill. But what’s the alternative, freezing? Of course not.

While the easy answer is to say you need a new furnace, boiler, or heat pump, that’s just not always a reality. For most of us, a $2,000 (minimum) expense isn’t something we can just put on our credit cards or pay off immediately. And what if there is a draft coming in from one of your windows? Not all of us know how to seal it, and paying a handyman isn’t ideal.

Luckily, there are some improved heating hacks we can share that will help you get through the winter and make those repairs in the coming spring and summer.

DIY Improved Heating Hacks

  • Ceiling fans

This is probably the easiest improved home heating hack there is. If you have a fan in your home, you’re in luck! Throw that sucker in reverse. Of course, it won’t suddenly blow hot air instead, but it will help pull any warm air that might be trapped up along the ceiling down to you.

  • Carpets

Those thick bear skin rugs you see couples always spooning on in the movies might be cheesy, but they actually work. Don’t run out and buy one exactly like it. Just any carpet or rug will do in common areas of your home you’d like a bit warmer.

  • Draft stoppers

Just like weatherstripping, draft stoppers are something you can buy (or make) to help eliminate hot air from escaping under your home’s doors. It usually consists of a tube-shaped cloth that spans the length of the bottom of your door and is filled with different styles of insulated materials. You could also just hack it and roll up a blanket to fit along the bottom of your door too.

  • Cook more

This improved heating hack is not only better for you, but it’s easy too. Running the stove or oven to make meals saves on the cost of dining out as well as produces excess heat for your home. Think about it, that’s why people don’t like cooking in the summer. Time to use this tip to your advantage.

  • Run appliances (dishwasher, washing machine)

Doing the laundry can give off a bit of heat as well. Plus clothes come out toasty warm if you need a boost of heat while you’re bringing Netflix. And did you know that even when your dishwasher is half full, it still uses less water than if you were to do it by hand? Keep your clothes and dishes clean by running these appliances a bit more often in the winter.

  • Curtain control

While it’s always nice to let the sun in during the day, it can actually help warm your home a bit. Be sure to close them at night though. Better yet, if you have a bit of a budget, you could always check out insulated curtains too.

My name is Susan and I recently had to replace the furnace in my home because it was old, noisy and inefficient. I’m a relatively new homeowner (moving into my first home earlier this year), so naturally, I’m not too familiar with Toronto home heating options. Do I go with a new furnace or boiler or maybe a combi-boiler – whatever that is. Luckily, someone told me about Air Tech Toronto and this is how my experience learning about Toronto Home Heating Options went.

My Toronto Home Heating Options Weren’t So Confusing

I called Air Tech Toronto as soon as I started experiencing issues with my heating system. This was probably late in the winter months or maybe even early spring, so I wasn’t in desperate need of heat on a daily basis. When I told them about how the heat wasn’t really coming in steady, they were able to send out someone to assess the situation right away.

Now, I already knew ahead of time that my heating would need to be replaced sooner than later when I moved in – courtesy of my realtor. Apparently the unit was pushing 20 years old and even though it was running smooth, furnaces don’t normally last much longer than that. Sure enough, I was right.

Once Novel Care arrived, we had a much more detailed discussion about my furnace as well as how much a novice I am when it comes to being a homeowner. My technician, Dave, was very sympathetic to my situation and started to lay out my Toronto home heating options going forward.

To keep things simple here, it was really only 2 options that I needed. I have a bigger home that was left to me by my uncle, so combi boilers and ductless units didn’t make much sense to use. They’re better for smaller space living – like condos. That left me with either a boiler or a new furnace. Since I already had the ductwork in place, Dave recommended a new furnace. Boilers are great Toronto home heating options too but in this specific case, a furnace made sense financially. No point in letting all that ductwork go to waste.

I’m very grateful for the team at Air Tech Toronto. I’m still learning more and more about the basic systems in my home, but having this team respond quickly to my call and walk me through my options was something I really appreciate. I’d recommend Air Tech Toronto any day.

Toronto and the GTA is a big place to live. It’s vibrant, diverse, and best of all, there are plenty of businesses and professionals who are available to help out on our schedule. Hungry in the middle of the night? There’s always a restaurant open late. Looking for a discount on some new clothes? There’s an outlet mall that’s accessible by TTC.

With all these things within our reach, you might be tempted to bargain shop for the wrong items and services though. We’ve all received bad deals at flea markets, wonky products from local vendors, or questionable food from a new independent restaurant, but none of those compare to hiring the wrong person to handle your home’s heating installation. That could really cost you.

Potential Problems With Amateur Heating Installation

Saving money is great, but just like you wouldn’t buy lobster or seafood from the back of a truck, you shouldn’t necessarily settle for the cheapest guy promising to take care of your heating installation. While the price might be right, an untrained professional could not only incorrectly install your furnace, boiler, or heat pump, they could actually compromise the warranty or damage your new system.

Professional installers have been trained by recognized schools or programs to ensure consistency and that all safety measures are met. Simply put, they all receive a through breakdown of what precautions to take and what not to do on the job. Better still, they are familiar with a variety of different makes and models, as well as which are best suited for specific situations. After all, you can’t just say I need a new furnace and pick one up. You need to factor in the size of your home, how many people live with you and few other factors in order to find the one that makes sense for you. That’s actually why furnaces, boilers and other heating and cooling systems are priced differently and made with different efficiency levels.

But a professional heating installation expert would already know all this.

While professional Toronto ductless AC repair and maintenance is essential for the health of your ductless system, there are some things you can keep an eye out for in between ductless appointments.

Water Leaks

Each of the wall-mounted air handlers in your home has a series of connections routed through a hole behind it. These connections include a power line, a refrigerant line, and a condensate line. The condensate line is responsible for removing water moisture from the cooling process so it doesn’t enter your home.

However, the condensate line may develop leaks over time, causing water to collect between the back of the air handler and the wall. Eventually, this can lead to structural damage to the wall and can cause the air handler to fall. Not only will you have to deal with the cost of repairing your wall, but you are also going to have to replace the air handler. Ensuring that your condensate line is in good shape is an easy way to avoid these problems. As you notice any sign of water on the wall surrounding the air handler then give it a long hard look and if you aren’t sure or see damage then call us for professional Toronto ductless AC repair services.

Broken Air Handlers

Over time, you may find that the air handlers in your home start to experience some wear and tear, which can lead to malfunctioning. this can mean they’re either not producing enough or any output to keep your home cool. Although this can be a nuisance, it is not as big of a deal as you might think. Sure, the room it is located in might be warmer than other areas of your home, however, the rest of the air handlers in your house should continue to operate normally. It is very rare that you should ever need to replace the entire ductless system.

Basically, all you need to do is call a professional Toronto ductless AC repair technician from Air Tech Toronto. We will drop by, check out your air handler and provide you with a free estimate for repairs or replacement. It’s that easy.

Refrigerant Leaks

Your ductless system works much like a traditional air conditioner, relying on the flow of refrigerant to transfer heat from one place to another. But what sets the ductless system apart is that it has significantly more refrigerant lines than a traditional AC, which means that the chance of a refrigerant leak is much higher. Signs of a refrigerant leak include a decline in cooling power and odd hissing noises. You might even notice fluid dripping from the system. If you suspect that you are dealing with this type of leak, be sure to contact an expert right away.
