A ductless or mini split air conditioning system operates in the same way as a central air conditioning system. They are both made of two components: an outdoor condenser unit and an indoor evaporator unit. As the refrigerant circulates between the two units, heat is transported from the indoor air to the outdoor unit, where it is released.

Cold air from the central air conditioner is forced through the ducts by your furnace’s air handler and circulated throughout your home. A ductless system eliminates the need for ducting and vents by connecting the condenser to the indoor unit by copper linesets.

How to Determine Which System Is better for You

If you have ductwork already installed in your house, going with a central air conditioning system is the more cost effective option.

If your home doesn’t have air ducts installed, a ductless mini split system is the smart choice to install. In this case, the installation consists of nothing but drilling a 3 inch diameter hole in your wall where the contractor can route the copper linesets. Compared to the installation of a new duct system, mini split installation is cheaper and less destructive, nevertheless faster. Ductless systems are also suitable for homes with new additions that are not connected to the house’s existing ductwork.

It is visually appealing?

A central air conditioning system is almost unnoticeable. A ductless mini split system, on the other hand, needs the installation of an indoor evaporator unit either in the ceiling or on the wall. Most manufacturers designed these devices to be as appealing as possible, yet you will notice them.

If you are very worried about the impact of the installation on your interior décor, a central system may be a better alternative for you.

How big is your house?

If your home is smaller than 2000 square feet, consider going with the ductless system. The majority of ductless systems may be insufficient to cool a larger home. If you have a larger house (2500 square feet or more), consider installing a central air conditioning system with ducts. Between 2000 and 2500 square feet, the increased power of a central air conditioning system will be worth the extra costs and you’ll get better efficiency out of the new central air system.

Are you concerned about energy efficiency?

The ductwork of a central air conditioner plays a crucial role in allowing a central system to achieve its efficiency potential. The efficiency of a central system is greatly reduced if the ductwork wasn’t adequately designed (more bends and angles in lines) or properly sealed. Ductless systems use much less energy than any of the central air conditioners.

Most ductless systems are called heat pumps instead of air conditioners. When it’s freezing cold outside, the unit will reverse the coolant’s flow direction and brings warm air into the house, as long as the temperature doesn’t fall below -30°C.

Heat pumps are extremely efficient, so this may be the ideal choice if you want to use your furnace less frequently.
