Being a homeowner is Toronto and the GTA isn’t easy and requires you to question just about every repair bill, maintenance fee, and any other cost that will inevitably rear its head. In the end, it all comes down to balance. You don’t want to book everything all at once, and you also can’t ignore everything in hopes it will get better. That’s exactly why booking fall duct cleaning is a good idea.

September & October Are Perfect Months For Fall Duct Cleaning

Luckily, duct cleaning is one of those things that doesn’t need to be done more than once a year in your home. This cuts down on cost and lets you save your hard earned money. The reason why the early fall months are the best times to book one is that it’s just before winter.

As the temperature drops, chances are you will be spending more and more time indoors to stay warm. Combine that with spending more money than you’d like around the holidays and you might find yourself hibernating until spring. More time inside means you have to remember to consider the air quality in your home. Over the year, vents and ductwork pick up debris in the air. This can build up over time and actually increase the risk for respiratory issues or even allergies for those of you with pets. Simply put, the air in your home is stuck in a vicious circle when your ductwork isn’t cleaned – and being exposed to that isn’t good for you or those you live with. Luckily, Novel Care can help.

Toronto and the GTA can have some pretty extreme weather. It’s either unbearable in the summer with humidity or freezing cold in the winter, so it’s important to know what your options are when it comes to heating and cooling. See why heat pumps might just be your best bet.

Heating And Cooling 101 – What You Need To Know

Unless you work in the world of HVAC, it can be pretty confusing to know the differences between central air conditioning and ductless, or heat pumps and boilers.

First things first, heat pumps are 100% useful in both the summer and winter months. When it gets hot out, the system works to pull in air from outside, cools it, and distributes it indoors. When it gets cold out, you can set it to heat your home. This time, the unit will pull in colder air and condense it so you only feel warm air coming in.

Another thing you should know is that heat pumps are great for keeping energy costs lower each month. They were actually designed to only control the temperature of a given area of your home at a time. This makes heat pumps great for heating and cooling living rooms, bedrooms and other frequently used spaces of your home – but not all at once. You should always consider asking a professional for an assessment to see if heat pumps make sense for your home. If you have a smaller, well-insulated space, then they could be your best option.

Novel Care Can Handle Your Heating And Cooling Needs

We’ve spent more than 30 years serving Toronto and the GTA, so we know a thing or two about heating and cooling. While heat pumps are a fantastic option, we always take the time to meet with you to assess your home, discuss your needs, and answer any questions you may have before any work is done. This ensures you have all the information you need to make an informed decision about your home. After all, these are typically big investments, and we want you to feel confident in your choice.

Whether it’s a heat pump, furnace, central air conditioner, or boiler, let us help you find the right answer for your heating and cooling needs. Give us a call at 905-737-5016 to learn more about your options. We’re even available 24/7 in the event of an emergency.

My name is Alex and I recently just bought a condo in the east end of the city. The building itself is a bit older and everyone is responsible for his or her own air conditioning/furnace. Since my building is at least 15 years old, I knew there was a chance I’d have some trouble with my HVAC. And that’s exactly what happened. I made the mistake of calling someone my property manager recommended without checking up on them first. Now I’m still dealing with these guys for my central heating repair and winter is almost over!

Should’ve Gone With Novel Care For Central Heating Repair

After countless calls and emails with this HVAC company, it’s slowly starting to become clear that maybe they aren’t as professional as I’d originally hoped. Sure they came recommended by my property manager, but that’s only because they’ve had some experience with my building. It had nothing to do with how good they were. It was just a matter of convenience!

Naturally I did some digging into other HVAC companies who might be able to help with my central heating repair needs, and Novel Care was the first one to get back to me. They were nice enough to answer my questions and listen to my situation. Thanks to them I was able to actually get a qualified professional to take a look at my furnace within a few hours of my call.

They recommended I let the other company finish up since they were the official installers and it wouldn’t cost me anything, but I just wanted this to be done. I should’ve just called Novel Care from the start.

Central Heating Repair Is One Of The Many Things We Have To Offer

Whether it’s central heating repair, installations, or any other HVAC problem, we’d be more than happy to help!

As a homeowner in Toronto and the GTA, you know that repairs and upgrades to your place don’t come cheap. That’s why it’s so important to do some research and know what your options are before investing in some central heating alternatives like heat pumps.

Heat Pumps Make A Great Central Heating Alternative

For those of you who may not know about heat pumps, they are a ductless option. A heat pump pulls in air from outside, condenses it, and pushes it indoors through a single unit.

Since they don’t distribute warm air throughout the entire home, heat pumps are quite different than central heating. They don’t require vents or necessary ductwork associated with central heating, making them a very efficient option for heating specific areas of your home. Most people will have one unit per floor that will either be in a bedroom or living room. Having these smaller units relies on you only wanting to warm the most heavily used areas of your home. The idea is that by heating only the rooms you use most, you won’t be wasting energy heating up your entire living space. This keeps monthly energy bills lower than if you had central heating in place.

Naturally, if you already have the ductwork in place and are familiar with central heating, installing heat pumps may not be for you. Yes, they are cheaper than replacing your furnace, but it really depends on the size of your home, and which areas you’d like to keep warmest in the winter months. Often times, furnaces can last for up to 20 years if properly maintained, so if yours isn’t broken, swapping it out for a heat pump instead may not be the best use of your money.

There are a number of different types of furnace filters available to put in the furnace in your Toronto home. Beyond all the different types for different uses and seasons, there are also disposable and permanent ones that need to be evaluated. So you’ve asked yourself what are the different furnace filter types? Keep reading below to find out.

Disposable Fibreglass

Probably the most common type of furnace filter on the market is the disposable fibreglass filter. These are typically great for preventing large particles, dust and debris from being circulated throughout your home.

Disposable Electrostatic

Electrostatic filters are excellent for ridding homes of things like smoke, pet hair and other types of hair and dander. These filters will keep allergens and other small particles out of the air in your home.

Disposable Pleated

Though pleated filters are regarded to be the best product to eliminate mites and spores from the interior air in your home, these types of furnace filters do need to be changed frequently. If left unattended, a disposable pleated furnace filter can damage your  HVAC system.

Permanent Electrostatic

With a life expectancy of six to eight years, this filter can be easily cleaned in your household washing machine and put back into use. Interestingly, while this permanent model results in less waste, it has been found to be slightly less effective than a disposable electrostatic filter for allergens and small particulate matter.

One thing to note prior to buying a new furnace filter is to check out what you already have in your furnace, especially the size. Most furnaces have a specific size for furnace filters that needs to be adhered to. The existing style is also a good guideline for the next one you’re going to purchase, unless you have a specific need for filtering the air in your home.

Owning a home comes with its own responsibilities. In Toronto and the GTA, that might include anything from yard work to shovelling your driveway, but don’t forget about your appliances too. In our experience, maintaining your own furnace doesn’t always mean hiring someone to do it for you. Take a look below for a few simple Toronto furnace tips to make sure you’re ready for winter, even if it brings another ice storm to town.

Toronto Furnace Tip 1: Mind Your Thermostat

Even when the temperature fluctuates well into November and December, you can guarantee that the cold weather will eventually make an appearance. When it does, make sure you don’t rush to your thermostat to crank it up. One of the simplest Toronto furnace tips you should consider is to be mindful of the thermostat. Don’t adjust it more than a few degrees at a time to protect your furnace from added stress. It might be freezing outside, but if your furnace gives out, it will be a lot colder – and will cost you more in the long run.

Toronto Furnace Tip 2: Keep Filters Fresh

A furnace may be a machine, but it still needs to breathe. This is why filters are important. Filters usually protect your home from circulating any particulates through your entire property. When they get blocked, your furnace needs to work a bit harder to force air through, so changing them more than once a year is recommended. Realistically, you’ll want to change any filters somewhere between every 2 to 6 months.

Toronto Furnace Tip 3: Keep Exhaust Vents Clutter-Free

Just like with the filters above, you’ll want to make sure your furnace can breathe. A vent allows your furnace to expel any exhaust outdoors away from your home. Take a look outside and make sure this vent isn’t obstructed. Think of it like a car. If you block the exhaust pipe, your car won’t be going very far, and same goes for your furnace.

Most of us know that we’re supposed to take care of certain things around the house like raking leaves, cutting the lawn, vacuuming, dusting, etc. All of these little jobs ensure our home looks good and functions properly. One thing that many people fail to do or are intimidated to do is changing their furnace filter. While it might not seem like a big deal, changing your furnace filter is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your furnace is functioning properly and the air in your home is as clean as possible.

Indoor Air Pollution & Your Furnace Filter

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) indicates that indoor air pollution is typically worse than the air outside of your home. Replacing your furnace filter is the best way to reduce indoor air pollution and improve the efficiency of your furnace. As the efficiency of your furnace increases the costs are reduced, so by simply changing your furnace filter you’ll be saving money on your energy bills and in the long-term with reduce wear and tear.

Regular Checking

Ideally, your furnace filter should be checked on a monthly basis. Most furnace manufacturers recommend changing furnace filters every 3-6 months, but the duration is heavily dependent on a number of factors. These can include the quality of the filter, what time of year it is, if you have pets in the house, how sensitive you are to allergens, the usage of your HVAC system, and anything else that can affect the quality of the air in your home. As there are so many different things that can affect the life of your furnace filter taking a look from time to time is the best way to know when it’s time to change it.

Types of Furnace Filters

There are lots of different types of furnace filters, all at different price points and levels of quality. There are pre-cut media air filter pads, pleated furnace filters, electrostatic air filters, HVAC filters, and activated carbon air filters. Typically, fibreglass panel filters are the cheapest types of furnace filters and can be found at most hardware stores. The most expensive filters are reusable electrostatic filters, which are designed to trap smoke and smaller airborne particles. They can be rinsed in a large sink or with a hose when they get clogged up and dirty, and if properly maintained they will last for many years.

A new furnace or air conditioner is a major purchase, and choosing the right system for your home and your budget is a task that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

There are many different options for efficiency, plus all the new technologies and add-ons to choose from. It’s understandable that some people get confused. But knowing what you want in a home comfort system is essential for making sure you’re getting the right models. After all, you’re going to be living with your new system for the foreseeable future, and you want to be absolutely certain that your equipment has the features that will save you the most money and get you the highest level of comfort.

Here are seven major factors you should consider when shopping around for a new home comfort system.

1. Reliability

The last thing you need is a new HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system that turns out to be unreliable. A “lemon” like this could end up costing a fortune in energy bills, expensive repairs and early replacement. Always choose a brand of system that has a proven track record for reliability and that’s made by a reputable manufacturer.

2. Humidity Control

The optimum humidity level for most homes is between 30 and 50 percent.

Lower humidity can dry out your skin, make you more susceptible to illness and damage the wood and electronic devices in your home. Higher humidity levels promote mold and mildew growth, as well as provide a welcome environment for pests like dust mites.

Properly sizing your new system is essential for good humidity control. If you live in a particularly humid or dry climate, consider a built-in whole-house humidifier or dehumidifier, which gives you precise control over the humidity level through a humidistat.

3. Noise Level

Standard furnaces and air conditioners, particularly older ones, can operate at a decibel level that’s comparable to that of a garbage disposal. If you’re looking for a system that hums quietly in the background, choose one with an electronically commutated motor, or ECM. This is the same type of motor used by refrigerators, and it’s considerably quieter than a standard motor. As an added bonus, ECMs use less energy and have a longer operating life than traditional motors.

4. Air Cleaning Capabilities

The Environmental Protection Agency has identified the air in the typical home as one of the top five environmental hazards. Regular air filter changes are essential for good indoor air quality, but if your or anyone in your home suffers from a respiratory condition like allergies, COPD or asthma, a built-in air cleaner will trap more allergens like pollen and mold, and will help eliminate more bacteria and viruses than the air filter alone can.

5. AC & Furnace Efficiency

furnace

Look for the Energy Star logo on high-efficiency equipment.

With the rising cost of energy and the continued degradation of the environment due to carbon dioxide emissions, choosing a high-efficiency home comfort system is the best way to save money on heating and cooling your home, as well as reducing your carbon footprint.

Energy Star, a voluntary program run by the Environmental Protection Agency, awards its label to only the most efficient systems, which are tested by a third-party in an EPA-approved laboratory. Energy Star systems are guaranteed to be more efficient than their non-labeled counterparts, and can save you up to 20 percent on your annual utility bill. Some high-efficiency systems are eligible for federal or provincial rebates or rebates through your local utility company.

6. Temperature Control and Air Circulation

Standard furnace and air conditioner blowers operate at just two speeds: on and off. Once the air temperature reaches the thermostat setting, the unit shuts off, and then it cycles back on when the temperature changes. This frequent cycling can cause several problems:

  • It wears the system controls out more quickly.
  • It can result in a temperature difference of up to 7 degrees between the thermostat setting and the actual air temperature.
  • It can cause stagnation of the air in your rooms on days when the temperature inside stays fairly consistent due to non-extreme outdoor temperatures. If the system is rarely cycling on, it can’t refresh your air.

To eliminate these problems, choose a model with a variable speed motor, which adjusts the speed of the blower based on the real-time heating and cooling needs in your home. These models cycle less frequently and circulate air throughout the home more consistently, giving you better control over the temperature in your rooms and increasing your overall comfort level.

7. Size

When it comes to a furnace or air conditioner bigger is better, right? Not always. An oversized furnace or HVAC system is likely to break down more often and even fail earlier than a properly sized system. It can also can seriously compromise your comfort.

A unit that is too large will heat or cool the home more quickly, but it will also cycle more frequently, and for a shorter time than it should. This will end up costing you more money in energy costs and repair bills, and the system won’t filter contaminants from your air as effectively as a properly sized system will. Additionally, a system that’s too big can’t adequately remove humidity from the air, but rather will re-circulate it back into the home, promoting mold and mildew growth.

Before you purchase a new system, have a qualified HVAC professional calculate the right size furnace or air conditioner using the industry standard protocol.
